GONE WITH THE WIND HOUSE
Lara, Victoria
A grand family home combining Victorian and Edwardian references with contemporary comfort and highly individual craftsmanship.
The design centres on a sweeping custom staircase inspired by the staircase created for the 1939 film Gone with the Wind. A large plaster dome and suspended chandelier mark the space, while custom balustrading and three sandblasted windows depicting the You Yang granite ridges give the interior a strong local identity.
The architecture also draws on Barwon Park Mansion and Werribee Park Mansion. Traditional elements include two levels of concave verandahs, arched double-hung timber windows, timber verandah posts, tessellated tiles and classic red brickwork.
Pastel colours, patterned wallpaper, decorative tiles and carefully designed joinery create a timeless interior with modern conveniences. A detached pool house continues the architectural character of the main residence and contains an in-ground concrete pool surrounded by serene Tadelakt-finished walls.
