A high-capacity highway service station balancing intensive vehicle movements with a generous food, retail and customer-services offer.

The brief

Located on Hammond Avenue—the Sturt Highway—the project required a service station capable of serving local customers, highway travellers and commercial vehicles. The challenge was to accommodate a large fuel forecourt and substantial retail building while maintaining safe circulation, effective acoustic separation and a welcoming pedestrian arrival.

The architectural response

The development is organised across a 3,614-square-metre site. A clearly defined entry and exit system guides vehicles through the forecourt, while 27 customer parking spaces, a loading bay and waste-storage area are positioned to reduce conflict between public and service movements.

The 860-square-metre building contains a 471-square-metre convenience store, a 144-square-metre café and kitchen, extensive storage, customer amenities and administrative space. The internal plan combines grocery, bakery, deli, fresh produce and grab-and-go food with a dedicated café seating area.

A central console provides clear surveillance of the shop, entrances and forecourt. The café and kitchen are positioned as a distinct food destination while remaining connected to the broader retail floor. Cool rooms, freezers, dry storage and delivery access are consolidated behind the public areas to support efficient daily operations.

Responding to context

The 1,083-square-metre fuel canopy establishes a strong roadside presence and provides weather protection across the principal fuelling area. Acoustic fencing of varying heights addresses the relationship between the commercial use and neighbouring properties while transparent upper sections retain light and visual openness where appropriate.

Landscaping along the site boundaries and highway frontage helps define the vehicle entries and softens the scale of the forecourt.

Material and brand expression

Polished charcoal blockwork gives the building a durable base, while aluminium cladding, bronze-toned elements and standing-seam zinc introduce depth and variation. APCO’s blue-and-white identity connects the building, canopy and signage as one recognisable composition.

The outcome

The project demonstrates how a large service station can function as more than a fuel stop. The coordinated arrangement of retail, café, amenities and forecourt infrastructure creates a legible and efficient destination suited to both short visits and longer rest breaks.
